The Gardens

Your 'passport', map & our signs will lead you around the village to make sure you don't miss anything but for now a little taster of just a few of the gardens to visit...

This small garden on two levels has a sunny area with mixed herbaceous borders & a shady area with mainly green all year round planting.

It is designed on the diagonal to address the wide, shallow plot.

Don't forget to have a go at the 'First Letters' prize quiz in this garden!

Harley House Garden

Mature trees & shrubs form the framework to this garden, though it remains a 'work in progress'

....Through the door to this little haven

.... and next door a gradually evolving garden of mixed planting

This small garden, which is 14 years old, has evolved & changed always with wildlife in mind.

A haven for the birds that visit & a peaceful sanctuary for both wildlife & humans.

A short drive out of the village but well worth the trip.

A large attractive garden with shrubs, lawn, herbaceous border & rock garden.

This garden is also part of the National Garden Scheme

Please note these images are from our last Open Gardens in 2008

It will be interesting to see how these lovely gardens have developed

About the

Ashby Art Club

We have about 70 members of all abilities from beginners to experienced artists.
The paintings on show at the Harley Hall in Osgathorpe will showcase a variety of styles & media from across our membership. The most common medium is watercolour followed by acrylic & pastel but we also have some very talented artists who work in pencil & ink.

Come along to the exhibition where you will be welcome to chat to club members or simply just quietly view the paintings.

If you’re interested in producing your own works of art you might like to come along to one of our meetings. We meet most Monday Evening 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Smisby Village Hall.
See our programme on our web site.

The Club provides a friendly atmosphere where people can improve their drawing and painting skills and discuss their art with others. The programme includes, Demonstrations, Exhibitions, Competitions and Social events.
If you are interested in painting or drawing, come along to any meeting and see if you like us. There is no obligation to join. Anyone is welcome whether a beginner or an experienced artist

About

Jennie McCall

Jennie grew up in the beautiful Scottish Borders where the local industry was textiles. Many of Jennie’s artistic influences came from all aspects of this industry and from the rich source of folklore and local traditions.

Jennie gained a BA Hons in Graphic Design and was awarded the Royal Society of Arts winner Design Award in illustration and subsequently the Royal Society of Arts Jacob’s memorial Award.
Jennie has lived in the East Midlands for over 20 years and has combined family life with further academic learning and artistic progression. She presently works and teaches from her garden studio, focussing on her practice of ceramics. She has works in private collections & exhibits throughout the UK.

Her materials are stoneware and porcelain clays enhanced by oxides and hi-firing glazes. Jennie’s sculpture, platters and installations are best displayed outdoors in natural surroundings where light and weather, leaf and moss settle comfortably on and within the work itself. All these pieces are completely frost-proof.

Current work includes a flock of lapwings created in porcelain & giant chess pieces inspired by the Knights of the Round Table.

Jennie also makes limited collections of pots and contemporary jewellery.

For the Osgathorpe Art Trail Jennie has very kindly loaned us a sandcastle garden sculpture to display. Also a small collection of her playful 'Fruit Pots' will be on sale.

About

Carrie Dickens

Carrie Dickens' inspiration comes from a material's reaction to manipulation. She has an intense curiosity about what happens to materials at their limits, and the processes that bring them there.

Her tendency is to work at a small scale, usually no larger than hand-sized but often much smaller. Overlooked detail and elegance in the everyday is of interest to her, as well as the memory of a moment that found objects possess. She explores contrasts and textures by the juxtaposition of materials.

Having just finished her second year of study on Loughborough University's School of Art 3 Dimensional Design course, focussing on wood, ceramic, and metalworking, she refers to herself as a 'maker in the making' as she has made no firm decisions about where the desire to learn about and explore with materials will lead.

Carrie plans to be an artist at work during the Garden Festival. Come along to see her working on various current projects.

Childrens' Activities

Create a Miniature Wildlife Garden to take home

Enjoy this family garden on Church Lane with its mixed borders, raised vegetable bed, patio fruits & potted herbs plus little 'rooms' to explore whilst the children create their own wildlife garden

Remember watching a beetle or letting a ladybird walk across your hand? A garden for wildlife could offer your children just that experience!

Encouraging garden wildlife can be as simple as recycling an old biscuit tin to make a miniature wildlife garden. Plant some nectar rich flowers, provide some shelter, and you will have already helped a number of friendly insects who, in turn, will help you by keeping annoying pests at bay. Children will love creating these miniature gardens too.

And to burn off some energy there's BIG BOB'S BOUNCING CASTLE sited at Brookside Farmhouse!
